Nano Banana Pro vs Nano Banana 2 (and 2.1) for YouTube Thumbnails, Tested

Google released Nano Banana 2.1 on October 6, 2026 and deprecated Nano Banana 2. We ran the same three thumbnail prompts through all three models and compared results and prices.

Short answer: use Nano Banana Pro when the thumbnail lives or dies on a realistic face or product, and Nano Banana 2.1 for bold, text-led thumbnails at about a third of the price. Nano Banana 2 is no longer the one to pick: Google deprecated it on October 6, 2026 and points developers to 2.1. In our three-prompt test, Pro passed all three, 2.1 passed two, and the old Nano Banana 2 passed one.

Quick Verdict

Nano Banana Pro: the most convincing people and products, $0.15 per 2K image on Replicate. Nano Banana 2.1: loud, readable thumbnails for $0.0504 per 2K image, but it filled the space we asked to keep clear for a title. Nano Banana 2: superseded by 2.1, which is cheaper and passed more of our tests.

What Google Changed on October 6

Google's Gemini API release notes list Nano Banana 2.1 (gemini-nano-banana-2.1) as generally available on October 6, 2026. Google describes it as an update to Nano Banana 2 (gemini-3.1-flash-image) that keeps Flash-level speed and cost while improving visual quality, prompt adherence, multi-turn character consistency and text rendering. The same entry deprecates Nano Banana 2, with no shutdown date announced.

Per Google's model page, 2.1 outputs 1K, 2K and 4K, accepts up to 14 reference images, and is "the more efficient counterpart to Gemini 3 Pro Image (Nano Banana Pro)". Nano Banana Pro itself did not change.

The Test

We used the three prompts from our public model comparison: bold headline text, a photoreal face with space for a title, and a two-price split screen. One image per model per prompt, 16:9, 2K, the same settings ThumbnailCreator uses in production, judged by eye. Nano Banana Pro and Nano Banana 2 ran on September 26, 2026; Nano Banana 2.1 ran on October 7, 2026 with identical prompts. These are single images, not a statistical ranking.

Which Should You Use for Thumbnails?

  • Your face or your product is the thumbnail: Nano Banana Pro. It handled skin, rain and products convincingly in every test. Upload up to 4 reference photos on ThumbnailCreator (Google's API accepts more).
  • Big text, loud colors, lots of variations: Nano Banana 2.1. It spelled the headline right and kept it clear of the face, at a price that makes ten drafts cheap.
  • You need empty space for a title: check 2.1's output closely, or describe the empty area more firmly in the prompt. In our face test it filled that space with neon signs.
  • Still using Nano Banana 2: move to 2.1. Google has deprecated it, and 2.1 is cheaper. In our test 2.1 did better on the headline and price-split prompts; the old model kept more title space in the face test.

Google also offers Nano Banana 2 Lite, a lower-cost Flash variant. We haven't tested it, and it isn't in ThumbnailCreator's lineup. For OpenAI's side of the same test, see GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst vs Flare vs GPT Image 2; for all 9 models on one page, see the model comparison. Frequently Asked Questions

Which is better, Nano Banana 2 or Nano Banana Pro?

For thumbnails built around a realistic face or product, Nano Banana Pro: it passed all three of our tests.
